Mission Statement

T he mission of the Office of the Provost is to provide oversight for academic affairs, including the University’s colleges, schools, departments, other academic units, faculty and students. The Provost implements matters relating to educational policies and handles the adjudication of student academic affairs. An environment of creativity and support is sustained by ensuring teaching excellence and groundbreaking research through means of faculty development, effective long-range planning, periodic program reviews and the retaining of distinguished faculty committed to teaching, research and service. Quality of the academic program is further enhanced by determining the University’s technological plan and ensuring that the necessary resources are in place to support academic programs as well as overseeing the procedures and criteria for the tenure and promotion process, the hiring of quality faculty, and post-tenure review. As the Chief Operating Officer, the Provost reports directly to the President.

Meet the Provost

Dr. Pamela Hammond

D r. Pamela V. Hammond is Provost and the immediate past dean of the School of Nursing at Hampton University. Through Dr. Hammond’s efforts, Hampton University implemented the first PhD program in nursing at a historically black college or university in 1999, resulting in an increase in the numbers of doctorally prepared racial and ethnic minority nurses. She has held a variety of leadership positions of increasing responsibility and dedicated herself to promoting the education and well-being of students and the health and welfare of underserved, abused, and neglected individuals. Her most notable appointments have been to the National Advisory Council on Minority Health and Health Disparities, National Library of Medicine Environmental Health Information Partnership, Virginia Board of Nursing, and the Advisory Council on the Future of Nursing in Virginia. Dr. Hammond continues to serve on several boards and is an active member of numerous professional organizations including the acclaimed American Academy of Nursing and the Academy of Nursing Education. She has authored and co-authored articles and chapters on a variety of topics, including health disparities, doctoral education, recruitment and retention of minority students, and child abuse and neglect. Dr. Hammond holds the BS degree in Nursing from Tuskegee University, a MS in Maternal Child Nursing from the University of Maryland-Baltimore, and doctoral degree in Educational Leadership from Old Dominion University.

Meet the Assistant Provost for Academic Affairs

Dr.  Polly Murphy

Dr. Pollie S. Murphy is a tenured college professor and a university administrator who has been an educator for more than 35 years. She holds the BS degree in Communication Disorders from Hampton Institute (now Hampton University), the MA in Communication Disorders from the University of Massachusetts/Amherst and the PhD in Audiology/Speech Pathology from Memphis State University. She currently serves as the Assistant Provost for Academic Affairs, Director of the Summer Session, and as the Accreditation Liaison for the institution’s 2008 Reaffirmation Review by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). During her tenure at Hampton, she has served as Associate Professor, Interim Chair and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders, and Assistant Dean for Administration, School of Science. Honored by her peers, she received the Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award in 1991, and was named an Endowed University Professor in 2000. Dr. Murphy holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Pathology, and is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the Speech and Hearing Association of Virginia.

Meet the Assistant Provost for Technology

Mr. Keith Perkins

Keith Perkins is the Assistant Provost for Technology/Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Hampton University. He has had more than 23 years experience in adult education, communications, and information systems. He has expertise in immersive technologies, educational media and technology, distance education and modeling and simulations. Mr. Perkins manages approximately 30 staff members to include network administrators, webmasters and help desk technicians.

Mr. Perkins began his career as a communications officer in the U.S. Army. He progressed through the ranks holding positions of increasing responsibility to include: Commander, 293rd Signal Company; Chief Information Officer (CIO), 377th Theater Support Command; Chief, Knowledge Management Operations for Multi-National Corps Iraq and U.S. V Corps Europe; Simulations Program Director, U.S. Army Signal Center and Fort Gordon Georgia; Computer and Information Systems Manager, Fort Eustis, Virginia.

Mr. Perkins was awarded the Bronze Star for his actions during combat operations in Iraq. He worked on the “America’s Army” video game (the U.S. Army’s first official video game) where he programmed realistic helicopter physics and provided his voice talents as the sniper instructor. Prior to his most recent appointment, Mr. Perkins served as the Chief of Innovations for the U.S. Joint Forces Command, where he was responsible for researching, analyzing and developing new training technologies for the Department of Defense.

Mr. Perkins holds a BS in Computer Science from Hampton University, a MS in Modeling, Virtual Environments, and Simulations (MOVES) from the Naval Postgraduate School, and a Masters of Public Administration from Troy State University.

Introducing "The View from Hampton U"

"The View from Hampton U" is Hampton University's new television show on COX Channel 11 airing Mondays at 5:30 p.m. and Wednesdays at noon and 5:00 p.m. The show is executive produced by President William R. Dr. M. Patrick McCormick Receives Grant Award

Dr. M. Patrick McCormick, Professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, received a grant from NASA in the amount of $93,805 for the development of cirrus and PSC climatologies using caliop, modis and MLS observations.

Dr. Isai Urasa Receives Grant Award

Dr. Isai Urasa, Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Chemistry, received a grant award in the amount of $293,853 from the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Arun K. Verma Elected President of State Organization

Dr. Arun K. Verma, Professor in the Department of Mathematics, was elected President of the Virginia Academy of Science for the 2010 – 2011 term, at its 88th annual meeting held at the James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA, May 22, 2010.

Mrs. Corinne Ramaley Receives Award

Mrs. Corinne Ramaley, Assistant Dean in the School of Pharmacy, received the Award of Merit from the Virginia Pharmacists Association (VPhA) on August 3, 2010 in recognition of her dedicated service to VPhA and Virginia Pharmacists during their annual meeting held in Virginia Beach.

Mr. Kwabena Ampofo-Anti Artwork Featured

In August 2010, Mr. Kwabena Ampofo-Anti, Professor in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, had his artwork featured as part of a poster featuring 50 of Washington, DC area artists of value. This historical documentary poster of DC area fine artists was published by DCNCA (DC National Conference of Artists).

Mrs. Jamantha Watson Authors Four Books

Mrs. Jamantha Watson, Assistant Professor in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, authored four books titled: Hear Me Out: Monologues for Today’s Generation (book), Classical and Modern Monologues for Men (book), Classical and Modern Monologues for Women (book) and Don’t Call Us We’ll Call You: Ten Audition Tips for Actors (book).

Dr. Shannon Chance Earned PhD

Dr. Shannon Chance, Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture, earned a PhD from the College of William and Mary in May 2010. She graduated with honors and received the school’s Award of Excellence. She also received an Outstanding Dissertation Award from the International Society of Educational Planners (ISEP). She will present the study at upcoming conferences hosted by ISEP and the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).

Professor Shonda Buchanan Receives MFA

Professor Shonda Buchanan, Assistant Professor in the Department of English, graduated from Antioch University, completing her Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing degree in June 2010.

Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders Receives Reaffirmation of Accreditation
